Marian Anderson : NPR

Born in 1897 in Philadelphia, Marian Anderson showed extraordinary musical talent from a young age. Raised in a modest household, she was encouraged by her community to pursue her passion for singing. Anderson's voice, rich and powerful, soon captivated audiences, and she began performing in local churches and community events.

Despite her immense talent, Marian Anderson faced significant racial discrimination in her career. In 1939, when the Daughters of the American Revolution refused her the opportunity to perform at Constitution Hall because of her race, it sparked a national controversy.

With the support of Eleanor Roosevelt and other prominent figures, Anderson performed an open-air concert at the Lincoln Memorial. This historic performance, attended by 75,000 people and broadcast to millions, cemented her status as a symbol of perseverance and equality.

Marian Anderson's career continued to soar, and she became the first African American to perform with the New York Metropolitan Opera in 1955. Her performances were lauded for their emotional depth and technical mastery. Beyond her musical achievements, Anderson was a tireless advocate for civil rights, using her platform to promote social justice and equality.
